We get 2 episodes of Bewitched every morning which I record and then have a mini-marathon at the weekend. Watching so many episodes back to back, I have begun to think Jim Carrey learned everything he knows about acting by watching Dick York. Has anyone else noticed this?

12 years after her death Montgomery gets Star

LOS ANGELES - A posthumous star honoring "Bewitched" star Elizabeth Montgomery was unveiled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a rainy Friday ceremony.

Montgomery "is probably in the heavens laughing at us as we stand in the rain," said honorary Hollywood Mayor Johnny Grant.

In the television show, Montgomery portrayed a witch trying to live as a housewife. The sitcom ran from 1964 into the early 1970s.

She died in 1995 at age 62. Among those attending the ceremony was her widower, actor Robert Foxworth.

"It is a great tribute to her that there are so many of you here," he said during the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard.

I thought we had posted this at some point but cant find it so thought you may be interested in it.

Elizabeth Victoria Montgomery (April 15, 1933 – May 18, 1995) was an American film and television actress whose career spanned five decades. She is best remembered for her famous roles as Samantha Stephens in Bewitched, as Ellen Harrod in A Case of Rape and as Lizzie Borden in The Legend of Lizzie Borden.

Youth
Born in Los Angeles, California, Elizabeth Montgomery was born to actor Robert Montgomery and his wife, Broadway actress Elizabeth Bryan Allen. She had an older sister, Martha Bryan Montgomery, who died before she was born, and a brother, Robert Montgomery, Jr., who was born in 1936. She attended The Spence School.

Montgomery made her television debut in her father's series Robert Montgomery Presents, and her film debut in 1955 in The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell.
Her early career consisted of starring vehicles and appearances in live television dramas and series, such as Studio One, Kraft Television Theater, The Twilight Zone, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. In 1954 she lost out on co-starring with Marlon Brando in the seminal film On the Waterfront directed by Elia Kazan. Kazan in his autobiography says that although Montgomery tested well in the role, she had an air of "finishing school" that troubled him.[citation needed]

She was also featured in a role as a socialite with Henry Silva and Sammy Davis, Jr in the offbeat 1963 gangster film Johnny Cool and, the same year, with Dean Martin and Carol Burnett in the motion picture comedy Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed?, directed by Daniel Mann. Nevertheless, Alfred Hitchcock had her in mind to play the sister-in-law of Sean Connery, who sees herself as a rival to the troubled heroine in the movie Marnie, but Montgomery was unavailable due to her commitment to a new television show: Bewitched.

Montgomery played the central role of Samantha Stephens with Dick York (and later with Dick Sargent), in the ABC situation comedy Bewitched. The show became a rating success (it was, at the time, the highest rated series ever for the network). It enjoyed an eight-year run from 1964 to 1972 and remains popular through syndication and DVD releases. She also provided the voice of Samantha for an episode of The Flintstones.
Montgomery received five Emmy Award and four Golden Globe nominations for her role. At its creative peak, Bewitched was considered one of the most sophisticated sitcoms on the air and cleverly explored contemporary themes and social issues within a fantasy context.

After Bewitched

Although Montgomery enjoyed enormous success with the show, she felt typecast and pigeonholed when she sought other roles after the show's run ended. Montgomery refused to do Samantha's famous nose twitch for fans after Bewitched went off the air, and was reluctant to discuss the show.

Montgomery returned to Samantha-like twitching of her nose and on-screen magic in a series of Japanese television commercials (1980-83) for "Mother" chocolate biscuits and cookies by confectionery conglomerate Lotte Corp. These Japanese commercials provided a lucrative salary for Montgomery while remaining out of sight from non-Japanese fans and Hollywood industry. The commercials were posted on YouTube in 2007.

In the United States, Montgomery spent much of her later career pursuing dramatic roles that took her as far away from the good-natured Samantha as possible. Among her later roles:
·	She received Emmy Award nominations for playing a rape victim in A Case of Rape (1974), for her portrayal of Lizzie Borden in William Bast's The Legend of Lizzie Borden (1975), and for her role as a strong woman facing hardship in 1820s Ohio in the mini-series The Awakening Land (1978).
·	In 1977, Montgomery turned heads when she played a police detective having an interracial affair with her partner, played by OJ Simpson in A Killing Affair.
·	She also made a chilling villain in the 1985 picture Amos, playing a nurse in a state home who terrorized residents Kirk Douglas and Dorothy McGuire.
·	One of her final roles was in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series entitled "Showdown," in which she played a barmaid.
·	She also had a long run as a guest performer on the game show Password, and host Allen Ludden referred to her as the best Password player ever on the show.
·	Her final television movies were the highly-rated Edna Buchanan detective series.

Montgomery was one of the first actresses to broaden her career from series work with television movies, and set the precedent for other TV series actresses, such as Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Melissa Gilbert, Carol Burnett, and Barbara Eden, to follow.

She had been discussed to star in the 1975 thriller based on the novel by Ira Levin, The Stepford Wives and, in 1994, Premiere magazine listed her as one of the stars considered to play glamorous, overbearing "Pearl Slaghoople" (Wilma's Mother) in the live-action film of The Flintstones.

Personal life

Montgomery was first married to New York socialite Frederick Gallatin Cammann in 1954; the marriage lasted barely a year. She was married to actor Gig Young from 1956 to 1963, and then to Bewitched producer William Asher from 1963 to 1973, with whom she had three children: William Asher (July 24, 1964), Robert Asher (October 5, 1965) and Rebecca Asher (June 17, 1969). The latter two pregnancies were incorporated into Bewitched as Samantha's pregnancies with Tabitha and Adam Stephens. After cohabiting for nearly twenty years, she entered her fourth and final marriage, to actor Robert Foxworth, in 1993. They remained married until her death

Political activism

In June 1992, Montgomery and her former Bewitched co-star Dick Sargent, who had remained a good friend, were Grand Marshals at the Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade. Montgomery had strongly liberal political views, being an outspoken champion of women's rights and gay rights throughout her life. She narrated a series of political documentaries in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including Coverup: Behind the Iran Contra Affair (1988) and the Academy Award winning The Panama Deception (1992).

Illness and death

Montgomery was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the spring of 1995. She had ignored the symptoms of her illness until it was too late during the filming of "Deadline for Murder: From the Files of Edna Buchanan." Unwilling to die in a hospital, and with no hope of recovery, she elected to return to her Beverly Hills home that she shared with Foxworth. She died there, in the company of her children and husband, on May 18, 1995, at age 62, only eight weeks after her diagnosis.

A memorial service was held on June 18, 1995, at the Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills. Herbie Hancock provided the music, and Dominick Dunne spoke about their early days as friends in New York. Other speakers included Robert Foxworth, who read out sympathy cards from fans, her nurse, her brother, daughter and stepson.

Esmeralda Has Passed Away

LOS ANGELES - Alice Ghostley, the Tony Award-winning actress best known on television for playing Esmeralda on "Bewitched" and Bernice on "Designing Women," has died. She was 81.

Ghostley died Friday at her home in Studio City after a long battle with colon cancer and a series of strokes, longtime friend Jim Pinkston said.

Ghostley made her Broadway debut in "Leonard Sillman's New Faces of 1952." She received critical acclaim for singing "The Boston Beguine," which became her signature song.

Miles Kreuger, president of the Los Angeles-based Institute of the American Musical, said part of Ghostley's charm was that she was not glamorous.

"She was rather plain and had a splendid singing voice, and the combination of the well-trained, splendid singing voice and this kind of dowdy homemaker character was so incongruous and so charming," Kreuger said.

In the 1960s, Ghostley received a Tony nomination for various characterizations in the Broadway comedy "The Beauty Part" and eventually won for best featured actress in "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window."

From 1969 to 1972, she played the good witch and ditzy housekeeper Esmeralda on TV's "Bewitched." She played Bernice Clifton on "Designing Women" from 1987 to 1993, for which she earned an Emmy nomination in 1992.

Ghostley's film credits include "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Graduate," "Gator" and "Grease."

She was born on Aug. 14, 1926, in Eve, Mo., where her father worked as a telegraph operator. She grew up in Henryetta, Okla.

After graduating from high school, Ghostley attended the University of Oklahoma but dropped out and moved to New York with her sister to pursue theater.

"The best job I had then was as a theater usher," she said in a 1990 Boston Globe interview. "I saw the plays for free. What I saw before me was a visualization of what I wanted to do and what I wanted to be."

She was well aware of the types of roles she should pursue.

"I knew I didn't look like an ingenue," she told The Globe. "My nose was too long. I had crooked teeth. I wasn't blond. I knew I looked like a character actress.

"But I also knew I'd find a way," she added.

Ghostley, whose actor husband, Felice Orlandi, died in 2003, is survived by her sister, Gladys.

A "Jumbled" poet

Today's Jumble words are

Brook
Agile
Oblong
Queasy

Using them, I composed the following.

A nightingale's song stirred in the poet memories of his agile youth, so he leapt over the brook, then leapt back, and leapt over a third time, landing queasy. His stomach soon settled in an oblong box.

What can you make of them?

Fans of such playfulness are invited to join Jumble Bums; we do this every day.

I love the Jumble (“that scrambled word game”) in the morning paper. Some time back I started jotting down the words of the day and turning them into phrases (--canned bamboo * tempo trophy * limber dismay * ). Why not? Sometimes they inspire poems or descriptions for stories. (“Limber dismay” is classic, even if I didn’t think of it!)

So I’m starting this tribe for other lovers of the Jumble and wordplay.
There’s a link in case you wish to play the daily Jumble online.

Paul Edward Lynde (June 13, 1927 – January 10, 1982) was an American comedian and actor.
He was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio to Hoy and Sylvia (neé Bell Doup) Lynde.

A noted character actor, Lynde was well known for his roles as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched (which established the "funny uncle" cliché) and Harry McAfee, the befuddled father in Bye Bye Birdie. He was also the center square on the classic game show Hollywood Squares from 1968 to 1981.

Lynde first got recognition in the Broadway revue New Faces of 1952 in which he co-starred opposite fellow newcomers Eartha Kitt, Alice Ghostley, and Carol Lawrence. One notable skit involved Lynde as a husband in crutches coming back from an African safari. The play was filmed into a movie in 1954. After the revue's run, Lynde co-starred in the short-lived sitcom Stanley opposite Buddy Hackett and Carol Burnett, both of whom were also starting out their careers in show business. He became a regular on several sitcoms and variety shows such as The Perry Como Show.

Lynde did extensive voice work on animated cartoons, particularly those of Hanna-Barbera Productions. His most notable Hanna-Barbera roles were those of Sylvester Sneakly (a.k.a. "The Hooded Claw") in The Perils of Penelope Pitstop, Mildew Wolf from The Cattanooga Cats and Laff-a-Lympics, Pertwee from ‘’Where's Huddles?’’, and Templeton the rat from the animated feature Charlotte's Web.

Lynde was found dead in his Beverly Hills home by friend Paul Barresi. The coroner ruled the death a heart attack.

Lynde was widely known to be gay in Hollywood. But despite his stereotypically flamboyant mannerisms and sometimes rather overtly-gay double entendres on Hollywood Squares, he never publicly acknowledged his homosexuality. In fact, Lynde was affectionately nicknamed "America's Most-Eligible Bachelor" by the public, perhaps in seeking a logical reason for his lack of a wife.

The character of Roger on American Dad! is evidently based on Lynde.

9/4 Happy Birthday Dick York

Dick York (4 September 1928 – 20 February 1992) was an American actor in radio, Broadway stage, and television.

Born Richard Allen York in Fort Wayne, Indiana, York grew up in Chicago, where a Catholic nun first recognized his vocal promise. He began his career at age 15 as the star of the CBS radio program That Brewster Boy. He also appeared in hundreds of other radio shows and instructional films before heading to New York City, where he acted on Broadway in Tea and Sympathy and Bus Stop. He performed with stars including Paul Muni and Joanne Woodward in live television broadcasts and with Janet Leigh, Jack Lemmon, and Gary Cooper in movies, including My Sister Eileen, Cowboy, and They Came to Cordura. He played the role of Bertram Cates, the young teacher charged with teaching the theory of evolution, in the 1960 classic Inherit the Wind starring Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, and Gene Kelly. He went on to star with Kelly in the television comedy/drama Going My Way and to appear in dozens of episodes of now-classic TV shows, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Wagon Train, The Twilight Zone, and Route 66.

York is best known as the first actor to play Darrin Stephens in the 1960s sitcom Bewitched. The show was a huge success and York was nominated for an Emmy in 1968, but a debilitating back injury he had suffered on the set of They Came to Cordura caused him increasing pain, and led or contributed to his misuse of pain-alleviating drugs. During the fifth season on the sitcom, he collapsed on the Bewitched set and was rushed to the hospital. From his hospital bed he resigned from the show to devote himself to drug rehabilitation and recovery. For the 1969-70 season, he was replaced in the TV series by actor Dick Sargent, who held the role until the series ended in 1972.

As he battled his back pain, York gained 150 pounds and lost most of his teeth. He and wife Joan supported themselves by cleaning an apartment house they owned until they fell on further hard times and lost the building. As York related in his posthumously-published memoir, The Seesaw Girl and Me, it took him many more years to regain an interest in acting and to try to revive his career. He lost the weight he had gained, and appeared on several prime-time TV shows including Simon and Simon and Fantasy Island.

York spent his final years battling emphysema. Ultimately bedridden in a small home in Rockford, Michigan he founded Acting for Life, a private fundraising effort to help the homeless. Using his telephone as his pulpit, York motivated politicians, business people, and regular folk to contribute supplies and money. York is buried in Plainfield Cemetery in Rockford, Michigan.

I walked into the office to read for Bewitched and Liz was sitting there. She unfolded those gorgeous legs and looked at me. I saw her in person for the first time. She had full lips and dark soft hair. She was sex all over.

I took pain pills to get to sleep because I didn't want to go to work the next day exhausted.

Piper insisted she had to be out of breath when we played this one scene, so she ran around the block. Thank God she wasn't doing a crucifixtion scene; we would have had to nail her to the wall.

RIP Kasey Rogers "Bewitched's Louise Tate dead at 80"

Kasey Rogers (December 15, 1926 - July 6, 2006) was an American actress.
Rogers was born in Morehouse, Missouri but moved with her family to California at the age of two.

Rogers birthname was Imogene Rogers. As a child, she was so good at baseball the other kids decided to nickname her Casey (after the famous poem "Casey at the Bat"). Later, Rogers changed the C to a K.

Rogers began work under the names Laura Elliott and Laura Elliot for Paramount studios. She appeared in movies such as Special Agent (1949), Samson and Delilah (1949), Paid in Full (1950), Two Lost Worlds (1951), and Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (1951).

In the mid-1950s, Rogers began working in television. She guest starred on various series such as Stage 7, The Lone Ranger, Panic, Maverick, Perry Mason and many others.
In 1964, she landed a starring spot on Peyton Place as "Julie Anderson". She left the role in 1966, just in time to replace Irene Vernon in the role of "Louise Tate" on Bewitched, in a same character, different actor situation.

In 1972, she made her final appearance in the role. Aside from a few guest spots here and there, and appearances on the Bewitched edition of E! True Hollywood Story, Rogers retired from acting. Twice-married and the mother of four (and a grandmother), Rogers had in recent years turned her talents to writing and development, including the proposed new TV series, Son of a Witch.

After battling throat cancer for many years, Rogers went into cardiac arrest and suffered a stroke. She died, aged 79, on July 6, 2006, due to complications from the stroke.

Other achievements

In the 1970s, she became involved with motorcyles. After her son decided to buy one, she decided to buy one herself. This led to Rogers becoming involved in the world of motocross racing. She helped established PURR ("PowderPuffs Unlimited Riders and Racers"), a association that brought women into the male-dominated sport, in 1974. PURR would later evolve into what is now the Women's Pro class division.
Here is the Bewitched.nets Eulogy
http://www.bewitched.net/eulogy.htm

Trivia
Has successfully written several crafts and interior design books based on the "Bewitched" (1964) television series and holiday occasions.

Had red hair. Originally wore a black bouffant wig on the "Bewitched" (1964) series in order to resemble the "first" Louise Tate, actress Irene Vernon. Once Kasey was firmly established in the role, she eventually stopped wearing the wig.

Due to her popular work on "Peyton Place" (1964) as Barbara Parkins's long-suffering mother, she was cast as Louise Tate without an audition. Following the demise of the hit sitcom in 1972, she made a few appearances here and there but for the most part retired.

Wrote "The Bewitched Cookbook: Magic in the Kitchen" (1996) with her close companion and writing partner Mark Wood.

Played a brief but memorable role as Farley Granger's caustic estranged wife who is strangled by Robert Walker in Hitchcock's classic Strangers on a Train (1951).

In 1966 she replaced actress Irene Vernon as Louise Tate, the wife of Darrin's boss Larry Tate on "Bewitched" (1964). It seems Ms. Vernon was a close associate and friend of one of the show's writers, Danny Arnold who was fired. Irene was subsequently asked to leave by the producers. When Irene left, it was on the pretense that her husband was ill.

Happy Birthday Paul Lynde "Uncle Arthur"

Quotes from Hollywood Squares

Q: You're the world's most popular fruit. What are you?
Lynde: Humble.

Q: What is a "dual purpose cow?"
Lynde: It gives milk and cookies. But I wouldn't recommend the cookies.

Q: It is considered in bad taste to discuss two subjects at nudist camps. One is politics. What is the other?
Lynde: Tape measures.

Q: Why do the Hells Angels wear leather?
Lynde: Because chiffon wrinkles so easily.

Q: What do you do if you are driving downhill and your brakes give out?
Lynde: Honk if you love Jesus.

Q: Which is better looking, a pixie or a fairy?
Lynde: I'll go for the fairy.

Q: What is the most abused and neglected part of the body?
Lynde: Well, mine may be abused but it certainly isn't neglected.

Q: Why was Nathan Hale hung?
Lynde: Heredity.

Happy 103rd Maurice Evans aka Maurice

Maurice Evans (born June 3, 1901 in Dorset; died March 12, 1989 in East Sussex) was a British-born actor who became a US citizen in 1941.

He first appeared on the stage in 1926 and joined the Old Vic Company in 1934. His first appearance on Broadway was in Romeo and Juliet in 1936. He was in plays by Shaw, and also Shakespeare's King Richard II (1937), Hamlet (1938), and Macbeth (1941).

In World War II, he was in charge of an Army Entertainment Section in the Central Pacific.
American television audiences of the 1960s will remember Evans as Samantha's father, Maurice, on the sitcom Bewitched.
He made a great impact as the evolved orangutan Dr. Zaius, in the 1968 cinema classic Planet of the Apes.
He died of cancer in England, aged 87.

As of 2006, Evans appeared in more American television productions of Shakespeare than any other actor. For the famous television anthology, Hallmark Hall of Fame , he starred in the first feature-length (i.e., more than an hour) dramatizations of the plays to ever be televised - "Hamlet", "Macbeth" (twice - both times with Judith Anderson as Lady Macbeth), "Richard II", "Twelfth Night", "The Taming of the Shrew", and "The Tempest". This last featured an all-star cast that included Lee Remick, Roddy McDowall, and Richard Burton.

In bringing Shakespeare to television, he was a true pioneer, although Evans's performances in Shakespeare are not as highly regarded today as they once were, especially after Laurence Olivier became the twentieth century's pre-eminent Shakesperean actor. Evans also brought his Shakespeare productions to Broadway many times.

Ironically, he was/is most famous for portraying a warlock in "Bewitched", and for his role as Dr. Zaius in the original "Planet of the Apes". Younger audiences are totally unfamiliar with his appearances in Shakespeare's plays.
In the thriller Rosemary's Baby (1968) he plays a friend of Rosemary (Mia Farrow), Hutch, who warns her against the witches in her apartment building, and is killed by them for his troubles.

Maurice Evans' other film credits include:
WHITE CARGO
RAISE THE ROOF
PATHS OF GLORY
SCROOGE
THE STORY OF GILBERT AND SULLIVAN (As Sullivan)
ANDROCLES AND THE LION
MACBETH (Title Role)
THE WAR LORD
JACK OF DIAMONDS
PLANET OF THE APES
ROSEMARY'S BABY
BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES
THE JERK
Maurice's television credits include:
HAMLET
RICHARD II
THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
TWELFTH NIGHT
THE TEMPEST

footnote

His friend and business manager David "Taffy" Barlow, a former lover himself until he got too old, made Maurice's last days all the more comfortable by hiring teenaged rent boys to strip down and lie in the bed with him. This quite shocked some of his deathbed visitors.

My undying devotion to Agnes Moorehead I have to say Endora.

But close 2nd is Serena. Because Elizabeth Montgomery did such a great job and making her a trully individual and separate character from Samantha. I think Montgomery really gets overlooked for the talent she had.

Happy Birthday Dick Sargent

Dick Sargent (April 19, 1930 — July 8, 1994) was born Richard Cox in Carmel, California. He was an American actor probably best remembered as "the second and the least favorite Darrin Stephens" on the hit television show Bewitched, although Sargent had been appearing in films since his debut in 1956.

His mother, Ruth McNaughton Cox, had been an actress in silent films. His father, Colonel Elmer Cox, had served with distinction in World War I.
Sargent's relationship with his father was difficult. "I wanted him to love me, and I'm quite sure that he didn't," he commented in 1991. Cox died of a stroke when Sargent was eleven, and afterward the boy was sent off to military school. He was so unhappy that he went on a crash diet to get himself expelled for poor health.

Once back home he graduated from high school and entered Stanford University, where he studied acting and appeared in a number of student productions. During those years he came to realize that he was gay, which filled him with anxiety and led him to "a couple of good college tries at suicide."

Sargent left Stanford to pursue a career as an actor. He did odd jobs to sustain himself while working on stage and eventually finding minor screen parts.

After appearances in several forgettable films, Sargent won roles--albeit still small ones--in more successful productions, including The Great Impostor (directed by Richard Mulligan, 1960) and That Touch of Mink (directed by Delbert Mink, 1962).

Sargent also did television work, including a recurring role on the situation comedy One Happy Family in 1961.

Sargent auditioned successfully for a lead role in the situation comedy Bewitched but was unable to accept it because of contractual obligations to Universal Studios. He eventually did take the part in 1969 when actor Dick York, who originally played the role, had to withdraw for health reasons. He played Darrin until the show ended in 1972.
Like many other actors Sargent remained closeted, fearing that the revelation of his sexual orientation would spell ruin for his career. As other actors, including Raymond Burr, had done before him, he invented a former spouse, in Sargent's case a fictional divorced wife. In another time-worn move, he cooperated in fueling media speculation that he was romantically involved with women, escorting starlets to Hollywood parties. On one occasion he posed with actress Connie Francis for pictures that appeared in a movie fan magazine. "We looked passionately at each other, but that was the only time I ever saw her," Sargent recalled in 1991.

Unbeknownst to audiences, Sargent was in a loving and stable relationship with another man, a television screenwriter, whom he later identified publicly simply as Frank. It pained Sargent not to be able to speak openly about their bond and to have to call the love of his life a "business associate." The pair were together for twenty years until Frank died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1979.

Among those who knew of the relationship was Elizabeth Montgomery, the star of Bewitched, who became a good friend to Sargent. She and her husband often socialized with Sargent and Frank.

Sargent continued to work regularly in film and made numerous guest appearances on various TV shows, appearing in a number of shows including The Streets of San Francisco, Taxi, Murder, She Wrote, and L.A. Law. In the mid-eighties, he played the role of Richard Preston, the widowed father, in the syndicated sitcom Down to Earth. It was the second time that Sargent replaced a previous actor in a role.

Sargent chose October 11, 1991, National Coming Out Day, to announce that he was gay. He stated that factors motivating his decision to come out included California governor Pete Wilson's veto of a bill to protect gay men and lesbians from job discrimination and also his concern about the rate of suicide among young gay people, but he was responding as well to his outing by a tabloid newspaper, The Star, that erroneously reported that he and a new lover had trashed a house and that the police had evicted them.
Sargent--with his friend Montgomery at his side--served as Grand Marshal of the 1992 Orange County, California gay pride parade. He also participated in the Lesbian and Gay Public Awareness Project and began speaking out on gay rights issues.

He died shortly thereafter from prostate cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 64. Montgomery died less than a year later of cancer at the age of 62.

Elizabeth Victoria Montgomery (April 15, 1933– May 18, 1995) was an American movie and television actress.
Born in Los Angeles, California, she was the daughter of actor Robert Montgomery and his wife, Elizabeth Bryan Allen.
She is best remembered for her leading role as the witch Samantha in the ABC situation comedy Bewitched. This show was a huge success during its eight-year run from 1964 to 1972 and remains popular through syndication and the 2005 movie remake starring Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman. Montgomery received five Emmy Award and four Golden Globe nominations for her role as Samantha.

Montgomery made her television debut in her father's series Robert Montgomery Presents, and her film debut in 1955 in The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell. Her early career then languished, consisting of supporting roles and appearances in television series.

Montgomery refused to do Samantha's famous nose twitch for fans after Bewitched went off the air, and was reluctant to discuss this role. She spent the remainder of her career pursuing dramatic roles that took her as far away from the good-natured Samantha typecasting as possible. She received Emmy Award nominations for playing a rape victim in A Case of Rape (1974), for her portrayal of the notorious Lizzie Borden in The Legend of Lizzie Borden (1975), and for her role as a strong woman facing hardship in 1820's Ohio in the mini-series The Awakening Land (1978). She also made a chilling villain in the 1985 picture Amos, playing a nurse in a state home who terrorized residents Kirk Douglas and Dorothy McGuire. Her final acting role was in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series entitled "Showdown," in which she played a barmaid.

She was married to actor Gig Young from 1956 to 1963; to Bewitched producer William Asher from 1963 to 1973, with whom she had 3 children; had an affair with Richard Michaels the director of Bewitched, for a year before they finally came out with the truth. Her marriage to William Asher ended and so did Bewitched (through Bill's own admission that he was involved with a woman named Nancy Fox who was an extra on the set). She moved out of her house, moved in with Michaels, and they lived together for two years before they broke up because of guilt. She was married to actor Robert Foxworth, (with whom she had been living for over 20 years) from 1993 until her death.

She had an older sister, Martha Bryan Montgomery, who died before Elizabeth was born, and a brother, Robert Montgomery Jr., who was born in 1936.

Elizabeth Montgomery died of colorectal cancer on May 18, 1995, at the age of 62. She died just eight weeks after being diagnosed with the disease. At the time of her death, the media widely reported that she had ignored the symptoms of her illness until it was too late, as she was caring for Robert Foxworth, who had had hip replacement surgery.

Unwilling to die in a hospital, and with no hope of recovery, she elected to return to her Beverly Hills home that she shared with Foxworth; she died there with Robert and her children waiting outside of the bedroom at her request.
Her remains were cremated shortly after her death.

Dick York Book Still Magic

here is a brief review of the book released this year.

Dick York: Still Magic
In a critically acclaimed book, Dick York, the original Darrin of Bewitched, reveals intimate details about his hardscrabble childhood, his rise to fame, and his shocking fall from sitcom stardom.
Bewitched is back -- and so is the brilliant, original Darrin.
The first season of the 60s sitcom has just been released on DVD, and a Bewitched movie starring Will Ferrell as Darrin just opened nationwide. Meanwhile, the original Darrin, Dick York, who died in 1992, is earning raves for his posthumously published memoir, The Seesaw Girl and Me.

A little TV history here: In the 1968-69 season, York vanished from Bewitched. The next season, without any explanation, a new Darrin was kissing Samantha. "They replaced Darrin in the original Bewitched," Ferrell says in the movie, "and no one noticed!" In fact, so many people noticed that the Darrin switch has become a pop-culture milestone.

But what really happened to York?

According to his memoir, the Bewitched star was dealing with some very human problems. In the years following Bewitched York battled physical injury and overcame an addiction to prescription pain pills. He spiraled into poverty, gained and lost 150 pounds, and hung on to hopes for a showbiz comeback.

Through all these struggles York kept his youthful spirit, his compassion for others, and the love of his life, Joan "Joey" York, the seesaw girl of the title.

"We had many tough times in our life - a lot of ups, a lot of downs," Mrs. York writes in the book's foreword. "But Dick and I managed to be together and smile through all of them."

The book includes colorful details about York's hardscrabble childhood in Depression-era Chicago, his rise to radio, Broadway, movie and television fame alongside actors such as Spencer Tracy, Gene Kelly, Gary Cooper and Elizabeth Montgomery, and his post-Bewitched efforts to regain his health and restart his career.

Stricken with emphysema in 1986, York devoted his final years to a campaign to help the homeless. He died in 1992 at the age of 63.

Written in the late 80s, York's long-awaited book is now available from New Path Press. Reviewers have termed it "funny and lyrical," "unusual and inspiring" and "bittersweet."

"Dick's book is fresh and full of surprising twists, and it rewards readers with laughs and hope," said publisher Claudia Kuehl. "Anybody who has experienced misfortune or disappointment - and who hasn't? - can tap into Dick's energy and optimism."

Publication of the book coincides with Bewitched's fortieth anniversary year and the rise of interest in all things Bewitched.

The 256-page hardcover retails for $25.95 and includes 41 black and white photos. It is available from the online booksellers Amazon.com and Alibris.com and directly from the publisher.

In honor of York, a portion of any profits will be donated to several charities, Kuehl said.

Lyrics to the Bewitched Theme

I never new that there were lyrics to it. A tribe friend told me indeed there were. The following lyrics are from a Peggy Lee 3 CD box set.

Bewitched lyrics

bewitched, bewitched
you've got me in your spell
bewitched, bewitched
you know your craft so well

before i knew what you were doing
i looked in your eyes
that brand of woo that you've been brewing
took my by surprise

bewitched, bewitched
one thing is for sure
that stuff you pitch
just hasn't got a cure

my heart was under lock and key
somehow it got unhitched
i never thought my heart could be had
but now i'm caught, and i'm kind of glad
to be bewitched, bewitched

[repeat after instrumental break]

...bewitched...bewitched...bewitched

I may have neglected to mention there is a tribe for Agnes Moorehead, well its a co-tribe. With Agnes and Tallulah Bankhead. Spurred on by a photo I found of the two of them and the fact that I am a bit fanatical on both of them.

It should show up as a related link to the left of the screen on main page of this tribe called Dueling Heads. If not heres the link

http://duelingheads.tribe.net/

and silly thing I have always enjoyed is if you rearrange the letteres in agnes it spells sean.(thats me) ok I dont know what to do with the left over g but like i said I am bit fanatical

Bewitched a charming flick

‘Bewitched’ a charming flick
June 30, 2005

By Kai Winkler
Special to the Times

Hmm. Seems I’m stuck in the ’60s at the moment.

On the heels of the remake of “Herbie” last week comes a charming and endearing film sort of based on the classic Emmy-decorated ABC series “Bewitched,” which ran from 1964 until 1972.

That, of course, means it was way before my time, so I had to do some researching before watching the movie starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.

I’m sure a lot of you already are quite familiar with the series, so bear with me as I try to familiarize myself a bit with it: Darrin (played by two different Dicks—York and Sargent) marries Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery), a witch who wants to become a mere mortal and live a “normal” life.

Their domestic bliss is disturbed frequently by members of Sam’s magical family and later the birth of their daughter.

As well, the series seemed to have touched on a lot of sensitive social and cultural issues of its time like bigotry, materialism, and women’s lib.

Sounds good, actually. Maybe I should go down to the video store and rent the first season (the release of which coincided conveniently with the start of the new film).

Right, about the film:

Jack Wyatt (Ferrell) is a TV star on his way out—desperate for one more hit movie. He is offered the part of Darrin in a TV remake of “Bewitched” and he plans to make the most out of it.

He even gets to choose who’s to play Samantha—and, of course, he’s aiming for some unknown so he can draw most of the spotlight.

When he chances upon Isabel Bigelow (Kidman), he can’t believe his luck: not only is she a looker who he falls head over heels for, she’s also doing that nose twitch thing.

But, oh sweet irony, he doesn’t know that he couldn’t have chosen better: she’s also a witch! Who happens, just like Sam in the series, to be fed up with being a witch and wishes nothing more than to live a mortal life—much to the dismay of her warlock father, Nigel (Michael Caine).

Pretty soon, however, she becomes disillusioned with the mortals (no wonder, being in Hollywood—or as, Shirley MacLaine as Endora says about actors: “Sometimes deep down, there is no deep down”) in general and the self-centered Jack in particular, and she can’t help herself from practising some more witchcraft.

Director and screenwriter Nora Ephron (“You’ve Got Mail”) turned this 100-min., PG 13-rated film (for language and partial nudity) into part showbiz satire, part screwball comedy, and part homage to the original series—and did a darn good job.

The dialogues are witty, the jokes and sketches are well-timed and funny, and the entire ensemble is well-cast and displaying some chemistry.

Plus, pay attention to the soundtrack: a lot of detail went into that one, too!

Someone mention the short lived Tabitha show.

My question is. On that show Adam didnt have powers.

Its been a long time and I cant remember how they explained that away.

Since on the Bewitched TV Show he did.

Can anyone jump start my fuzzy brain
